"Faced with increasing discrimination and new laws which prevented participation in many occupations on the West Coast, some Chinese immigrants moved to the East Coast cities in search of employment. Early businesses in these cities included hand laundries and restaurants. Chinatown started on Mott Street, Park, Pell and Doyers streets, east of the notorious Five Points district.

The early days of Chinatown were dominated by Chinese "tongs" (now sometimes rendered neutrally as "associations"), which were a mixture of clan associations, landsman's associations, political alliances (Kuomintang vs Communist Party of China) and (more secretly) crime syndicates. The associations started to give protection from harassment due to anti-Chinese racism. Each of these associations was aligned with a street gang. The associations were a source of assistance to new immigrants - giving out loans, aiding in starting business, and so forth."

Foreign author at Brooklyn Book Festival who could hardly read his own book. I must love a writer who cannot even read his own writing.

Indian author Manil Suri doing a Bollywood dance at the Brooklyn Book Festival. This was the high point of the show, and it made a cracked smile come to my cynical lips.

Manil Suri, the author of The Age of Shiva and The Death of Vishnu performing a Bollywood number to perfection at the Brooklyn Book Festival. This was seriously good stuff. Hannah Kates berated me earlier in the day for saying that I judge books by the author photos, but after watching Manil Suri do his dance masquerading as an Indian woman I think we are both going to read his books.

I went down into the Matyas Cave that runs for 17 kilometers under the Buda side of Budapest. I traded some words and photos on the internet about the caving tour to straggle along for free. I had never been spelunking before and this caving tour was a good introduction.

The caving guide telling us what to do in the cave when we go inside. This guy could run through the narrowest passage in the cave with ease, looking like he was a native to these underground caverns.

The narrow passages of the caves under Budapest being navigated by a first time spelunker.

Cave paintings from the 1950's. "We were not the first people to come down here spoke the guide." It was interesting to see the marks of past cavers 50 meters down under the streets of Budapest.

Graffiti covers the streets of Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Everywhere you walk here you are greeted by the messages of VAS, TISH, KASHMIR and other notorious artists of the night. The graffiti in Budapest is mostly bombed tags and quickly scrawled messages with spray paint or marker or really nice hall of fame style painting that appears to be commissioned or with the permission of the land owner. The shear street-side graffiti coverage is awesome.

Tikal Palenque Mayan Ruins

These are photos of the Mayan ruins at Palenque, Mexico and Tikal, Guatemala, which were taken in the spring of 2008 on my travels through Central America of that year. Tikal costs the traveler more than $20 to enter, while Palenque only costs $4.50 to enter the archaeology park and another $2 to enter the nature reserve that the park is located in. If you enter Tikal after 3 PM you can also get in the next day.

These photographs are of wildlife, animals, and livestock in Honduras in Central America. They are of Macaws at the Copan archaeology site, an ancient Mayan carving of a macaw head that was a point marker in their ball game, a funny looking rodent animal that I cannot identify, and cattle in the Honduran countryside.

The following photographs are of the Good Friday celebrations in Honduras. On this day people marched in a large group through the streets following a reenactment of Jesus and other characters from the bible. The following pictures are of a cockfight in Honduras. The cockfight is part of the cultural heritage of Central America, and the depth of the ritual is pretty extensive. What is interesting is that the cockfight seems to be very similar all over the world. Clifford Geertz wrote extensively about cockfights in Bali, and they seem very much the same as what I observed in Honduras.

The gambling at cockfights in Honduras go beyond the rooster fights. There are other games for people to bet on. In this game people buy a number on the wheel and it is spun. While it is spinning someone throws a dart at it and the number that it hits is the winner.

Photographs from the Copan archaeology site. Copan was a Mayan city that grew out of the jungles of Central America aroun 500AD and lasted to the collaspe of the Mayan empire around five hundred years later. These photos are from the main cluster of Copan and show the famous hieroglyphic stairway, stellas, statues, stone carvings, Mayan texts, and Mayan art.

Casco Viejo Panama City Photos

The following photographs are of the Casco Viejo- Casco Antiguo- Old town of Panama City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Neighborhood. This place is awesome. It jets out on a point into the sea and the antique buildings of Panama rise up into the city scape. The Casco Viejo section is currently being rebuilt with great energy. It is especially interesting now as you can view the old ruins of buildings right next to ones that have been restored. I have a feeling that Casco Viejo will look much different a few years from now: the construction crews are working! Hurry up! Go there!

Panama Viejo Ruins Photographs

Panama Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside of Panama City. It was the original site of Panama City, but it was destroyed by Henry Morgan and his band of pirates. The Panama Viejo Ruins still stand today. To get there just take an Ave. Balboa bus that says Panama Viejo in the window. The driver will drop you off in front of the ruins.

The tower of Old Panama. They ask you for your ticket on your way up it. If you jumped the fence like I did to avoid paying $5, you better run.

Panama City Buses

One of the most colorful elements of Panama City are the buses which fly down the streets. These are no ordinary city buses, as they are painted from stem to stern with beautiful scenes of women, battles, movies, and loved ones. It is my impression that the drivers are permitted to customize their buses how they want to: so there are buses with shark fins on top, with paintings of beautiful women, and portraits all over them. These painted buses are awesome.

The following pictures are of the Panama canal. They are of the Miraflores locks, the Panama Canal workers, ships going through the canal, and the equipment that is used on the Panama Canal. The Miraflores locks of the Panama canal are around 20 minutes away from Panama City. You can get there by taking a Ave. Espana bus to the Cinco de May Plaza and then get on another bus from the bus station next to the highway to the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal.

Indigenous Boruca Brunca Crafts and Masks of Costa Rica

The below masks were carved by a Costa Rican indigenous tribe called the Boruca or the Brunca. They inhabit the southern part of Costa Rica and many people of their communities live off of carving masks, painting, and making traditional crafts to be sold to tourists to Costa Rica.

The following photographs are from the Guatemalan civil war that lasted for 37 years- from the 1960's into the 90's. These photos show the modal communities, which were essentially internment camps, children adrift in times of war, Nebaj, and May Day demonstrations. These photos are used with the permission of the Friends World Program of Long Island University.

You know, it was night time, they opened his door with an ax and just dragged him out in front of his family. There were also two guys on a public bus, and they just dragged them out and they were heard from never again. Guatemala at this point has more than 40,000 disappeared, and that was the way they disappeared. A van would pass by and you could be walking down the street and they would drag you into the back." Gallo Pinto: Costa Rican Food

Gallo pinto is THE breakfast in Costa Rica. Every morning here you are dished up a nice steaming plate of this fulfilling Costa Rican specialty. Gallo pinto is essentially black beans and rice, but the way that it is prepared makes it something special, as it is usually the leftovers from the previous nights dinner: so the rice is a little hard, the beans have been reheated a couple of times, and it is all extra oily from the multiple cookings. It is often combined with scrambled eggs to top off the breakfast. Gallo Pinto is Costa Rican cooking at its best.

Guayabo Archaeology Site in Costa Rica

Guayabo National Monument Archaeology in Costa Rica

The Guayabo archaeological park is in the eastern portion of the central valley of Costa Rica. The site sits near the top of Volcan Turrialba, which is 19km from the town of Turrialba. This is the largest archaeology site that has been discovered and excavated in Costa Rica, though only a portion of this site has been unearthed. The Guayabo site itself contains mounds, canals, monoliths, tanks, tombs, petraglyphs, and a twenty km road that stretches all the way down the mountain to Turrialba.

In the Guayabo National monument there are also hiking trails through the forest and an, "Abundance of forest species like the "carara", "magnolia", "cantarillo", "burio" and "cedro" are cover with a lot of plants like "bromelias" and orquets." http://www.costaricamap.com/ing/biopguayabo.html

Monte de la Cruz, Costa Rica Photos

The following pictures are from Monte de la Cruz in Costa Rica. This wildlife/ agricultural area is just outside of the San Jose/ Heredia urban span. It takes around 20 minutes to get there from the Universidad National de Costa Rica by bus. Monte de la Cruz is a beautiful area which has waterfalls, hiking and horse riding trails, forests, and agricultural fields.

These are the photos that I took during my visit in early 2008.

French Women's Clothing and Fashions Photographs

The following photographs are of women's clothing in France. Almost every woman in France is highly dressed and is very conscience of popular French fashions. I was in France for a month with a woman who unintentionally looked French because of her clothes. I took these pictures of of French women in Montpellier, a fashionable university town in the south of France.

Photo of the long coats that are very fashionable clothing for women in France. Jeans that are tight at the tip and then flare out at the bottom are also commonly worn under the coats in winter. Many women also were expensive shoes to bottom out their outfit.

This is a photograph of typical attire for French women: long dark colored coats with tight pants that flare at the bottom and nice shoes.

Many ladies in France also adorn themselves with very fashionable clothes complete with scarves and nice shoes.
Designer handbags are very popular with women in France.

Costa Rica National Sports Day Parade

The following photographs are from a parade in Heredia, Costa Rica that happened last Sunday. I am told that it was a parade to celebrate national sports day, but I suspect that Costa Ricans just like dancing in the streets. I joked that the parade was for Mira's great return to Heredia, but something tells me that odd games of basketball and Costa Rican sports take precedence over all.

Scary masks, I do not know who they are meant to represent, but I hope that it is not me

The Chinese residents of Costa Rica even got into the parade and had a traditional Chinese dancing dragon.

More scary masks, something tells me that they are of Costa Rican politicians, Oscar Arias perhaps? The people of Costa Rica seem to not like that guy very much.

Chinese Adoption Pictures

The following photographs are of my adopted Chinese sister, Meili. My parents went to China- Hunan Province- to pick her up in December of 2006. I had the good fortune of being able to meet up with them, as I was traveling up from India to the east coast of China anyway. The adoption process went smoothly and my parents took home a new Chinese daughter. There is a lot more to this story, if you have any questions then please comment below.

Hassan II Mosque Photographs

I first visited the Hassan 2 Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco in September of 2007. I went there in the early morning before many people were out int he streets and I was immediately overtaken by its great magnitude. The Mosque stands out as a great beakon over Casablanca and looks enormous even when relatively far away from it.

According to the Wikipedia Hassan II Mosque was "Designed by the French Architect Michel Pinseau and built by Bouygues^[1], it is the second largest in the world (after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca). It stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic, which can be seen through a gigantic glass floor with room for 25,000 worshippers. A further 80,000 can be accommodated in the mosque's courtyard. Its minaret is the world's tallest at 210 meters(689 ft)."

Hassan II Mosque was built on reclaimed land- almost half of its giant structure is over the Atlantic Ocean- and was began in July of 1986. It was completed in 1993.

Hassan II said, "I want to build this mosque on the water, because God's throne is on the water. Therefore, the faithful who go there to pray, to praise the creator on firm soil, can contemplate God's sky and ocean." (Wikipedia)

The next time that I was back in Casablanca- January of '08- I was sure to go back to the Mosque for another visit. This time I made it there during the evening, and it was a scene of pure beauty watching the sun go down over the Atlantic ocean from behind the Mosque's enormous stone cut arches.

The following photographs are from my and Wanderjahr Jill's travels in Morocco. I first came into Morocco through the airport in Casablanca and then wandered up to Rabat/ Sale. After a few days of walking around the ancient medina, the Kasbah, and the old town of Sale, I went over for a visit to Fez. I did not quite appreciate the standard deviation of culture that was to be found in this tourist pit of a city, although I was not much bothered by the packs of touts and hotel runners. I stayed at the International Youth Hostel, and had good laughs with the other travelers and tourist who would come in at night with low slung faces and tales of how they were riped off by the touts and hustlers in the ancient medina of Fez. I did have some good walks though in this medina- I got really lost, to say the least. From Fes I went to another imperial city called Meknes that is an hour by train to the west. I found a much more comfortable situation here and stayed for three weeks to study a little French so that I would be more prepared to travel south into West Africa. After my French lessons were over I went back to Casablanca and picked up Wanderjahr Jill at the airport. She was happy to be in Morocco, but she promptly got really sick off of a sausage that she ate in the Rabat Medina. She spent a couple of days in bed and then we cooked up a crazy plan to go to Europe and ride bicycles from the Atlantic Ocean to France.

After two months in Europe we returned to Morocco and had a relaxing week in Marrakesh. These are some of the photos of my Moroccan travels.

Shopping in Morocco

Shopping in Morocco can sometimes be an incredible hassle. Most areas of the country that attract large numbers of tourists- like Fes and Casablanca- tend to have a think cloud of touts and faux guides who float around and try a large number of tactics to attempt to steer visitors into paying large amounts of money for low quality goods. But if you can get through this cloud of hustlers you can find really interesting items: carpets, clothing, textiles, shoes, leather goods all can be purchased for a reasonable price if you show the proper diligence and barter hard . . . like a Moroccan. One tourist rich city that seems to be less endowed with these hassles is Marrakesh. But always barter hard.

If a shop keeper names his price at 300 Dirham, a good place to begin bartering is at 100. Work your way up from here, but I do not recommend paying much over half of the shop keepers original price. Moroccans seem to often spend over a half hour bartering with a shop keeper. I do not think that it will not be out of the ordinary for you to do the same. Name your price and stick to it, is all that I can say.
